Best ETS2 graphics settings

Three game settings decide how sharp Euro Truck Simulator 2 looks and how many FPS you get with an upscaler: the renderer, the anti-aliasing and the Scaling. Here is what to pick, and why.

1. Renderer: DirectX 12

DLSS, FSR and frame generation all run in DirectX 12. Deep Light's Install.bat switches the game to it (the r_device line in config.cfg). In DirectX 11 you still get DLSS and DLAA, but no FSR and no frame generation.

2. Anti-aliasing: TAA or TAA + SMAA

Deep Light replaces the game's TAA with DLSS or FSR, so the game must run TAA. With anti-aliasing off or on SMAA alone, the overlay shows a line asking to turn TAA back on.

3. Scaling: pick your quality

  • 100%: native anti-aliasing (DLAA or FSR native AA). The sharpest image, no FPS gain.
  • About 67%: Quality. Close to native, a clear FPS gain.
  • About 58%: Balanced.
  • 50%: Performance, for 4K screens or slower GPUs.

Scaling above 100% is not used for upscaling; the overlay's check list flags it.

4. In the Deep Light overlay

  • Upscaler: Auto. DLSS on NVIDIA RTX, FSR on any other DirectX 12 GPU.
  • DLSS preset K is the recommended one; L and M are there too, and newer presets from the NVIDIA app apply as well.
  • Frame generation (Pro): 2× on RTX 40 and with FSR, up to 6× or Dynamic on RTX 50. Dynamic follows your monitor's refresh rate.

5. Outside the game

  • Turn on Windows hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling for DLSS frame generation on RTX 40 and 50.
  • Close RivaTuner Statistics Server while frame generation is on.

Questions

DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 for ETS2?

DirectX 12 for Deep Light: DLSS, FSR and frame generation all run there, and Install.bat switches the game to it. In DirectX 11 Deep Light offers DLSS and DLAA only.

Which anti-aliasing setting should I pick in ETS2?

TAA or TAA + SMAA. Deep Light replaces the game's TAA with DLSS or FSR, so it needs TAA on; with it off, the overlay tells you to turn it back on.

Which Scaling should I use?

100% for native anti-aliasing (DLAA or FSR native AA), about 67% for Quality, about 58% for Balanced and 50% for Performance. Above 100% is not used for upscaling.

Why does frame generation use FSR on my RTX card?

DLSS frame generation needs Windows hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling. With it off, Deep Light uses FSR frame generation and the overlay says how to turn scheduling on.
